#23

Well, where to begin... I learned more from this program than most college courses I have taken. 23 Things was a great introduction into and course in how-to techniques that actually brings you from base ignorance to a platform of up-and-running. Pretty amazing really.

The subject and the possibilities are so grand that my head is aching each time I shut the computer down for the evening.

Our library now uses face book, RSS feeds, video and YouTube and a wordpress website. I regularly use web 2.0 tools to alter pictures and video and add spice to our online promotion and outreach. Our biggest success is our facebook page. It is easy to use and has a broad level of outreach contact. Some of the 23 Things like the wiki and the make your own blog will need more time than I have right now but are terrific tools to have waiting in the wings.

If you gave a similar course I would gladly take it. The only problem I had was that it is a massive amount of information to work with. So I started 23 Things 3 times before I actually got around to finishing it.

Lesson 11 #22 Podcasts

I have been using podcasts on itunes for quite some time. Great for long trips in the car. I have listened to Nancy Pearl's podcasts for book reviews. Interesting possibilities for examples. Also some that have caved in due to needing a life outside Web 2.0.

I added This American Life podcast RSS to my google homepage and reader.

Making a podcast booktalk would be fun and interesting but I am not quite up for it yet. Maybe in 2011.

Lesson 11 #21 YouTube

Signed up for a youtube account. I made a couple of videos with digital storytelling for banned book week and local harvest. I uploaded them to youtube; Banned Books 2010 and Reap the Rewards. I created a favorite list and checked out the ALA channel for subscription.

I use YouTube for movie trailers, authors@google, pottery demonstrations and I even used YouTube to help me learn to play the violin.

The library could find a use for youtube videos for book reviews, to show services offered, a tour of our facilities and exhibitions.

Lesson 10, #20 Explore Web 2.0 Awards

Well is regularly use over 28 of these web 2.0 sites. Google greets me every morning and sends me on my way with its many useful services.

Pandora is a great site and represents some of the best things about the internet. It introduces you to new music and artists, entertains and allows you to share interests and everyone seems to benefit.

#19 Track you library

Social mention was kind of fun. It makes me feel that all that advertising is worthwhile as much of it comes up. I found a person who had pictures of our library on a travel log.

I added a google alert for news to our email.

This tool is not top of my list to use but interesting and may have a place at some point.

#18 social mention

I found some chat on the Bradford Public Library. I am trying to add a link to a picture I found.

#17 Productivity tools

We have been using Google docs online for exchange for informational documents and to create spreadsheet for the library. It works great. I have also done an online photoediting using the picassa online programs. These are great tools to have available to everyone on the web.

#17 wikis

Not my favorite part of 23 Things. I got on and added my blog link. Now I am moving on to online tools of productivity.

Lesson 8 /14 add to wiki

I added a my blog and a website to the wetwiki but the notes dialog box refused to let me save it. After spending too much time I just gave up.

Lesson 8 / 16 exploring wikis

Well it was too much information to sort through. Some of the wikis are great but I have to admit I use them as a resource not as a collaborative. Wikipedia, wikiquote and howto were my favorites. They can be a very useful collaborative tool but it requires participation which is the hardest thing to to get in this busy world. Wikis could be used to form a regional library wiki or maybe as a favorite book wiki.

Lesson 8 /15 Library 2.0

The future is upon us right now. 23 Things is simply helping us catch up. If most people go to Face book instead of email than that is what works whether we agree or not. It gives me a headache trying to hold on to the rapidly transcending wireless of technology but as a lifelong learner what could be more exciting. I think most librarians love the book format so the challenge will be to follow alternative ways to create access while not leaving our more traditional patrons out in the cold. My advice is "don't be afraid, take one step then another and follow 23 things down the technology yellow brick road".

Lesson 8 / 14 Twitter

I joined Twitter and I understand it a bit better than I did the first time I tried. It is all about phone messages and so it needs to be short and sweet. That is not easy for me. I think it is a good tool for quick reminders and heads-up on happening news. It is just another tool for getting word out.

Lesson 8 / 13 Delicious

I am never going to finish 23 Things if you don't stop making them so interesting. This Delicious was an amazing discovery. I see so much potential for organizing information for myself and the library. I set up an account, did searches and spent hours investigating sites and how other libraries are using Delicious. I also added the VT23things to my network on Delicious. We will certainly add it to our website both for general research and to highlight very specific time sensitive events. We just started a research center with a dedicated computer and microfilm reader. A Delicious button with research sites will be wonderful.

Lesson 7 Library Thing

Well Library Thing has some potential but it will require a lot of work to keep it up for the library. I might be able to focus on just one section in the library and use a link to it on our web site or facebook. We have Library World at our library right now so it duplicates in many ways. Library Thing is more visually appealing and has the social component. I might use it with time.

Lesson 7 Play with image generator

I stayed up way to late with this project. So many possibilities but mostly chaff. Lots to sift through. I did make an avatar on google and that was fun. I posted it to my face book page as my profile picture. I will try out meesh for this also.

Week six catch up

Well as I am doing this late nights this lesson was definitely used as catch up.

Thing on week 6 Social networking

We set up a Face Book page for our library, Bradford Public Library, and it has been a huge success. I have people come into the library in response to posts and get good feedback with comment online. I post new books, programs and we have a donate button for our annual drive.

I think social networking is a tool libraries should be utilizing. It is fun but does take some time.

#8 Week 4 library blog RSS feeds

Added Mashable to my homepage through Technorati and I have Early Word.

Week 4 RSS feeds

Well this is so simple it is complicated. I now have a google reader account and subscribe to ListenUp Vt, Green Mt Consortium, and Library Traveler. On my IGoogle browser I have NPR books, NYT top stories, and weather RSS feeds. Now if I only had time to read them.

Long hot climb this summer with my family.

Week 2 Fun Technology

Banned Books
This is the Animoto link to a banned book video we made with the Animoto program. Neat and simple.

Week 2 Fun Technology

Animoto is a little program I learned at a library program. We used it for posts on our face book.

Week 2 Creating a blog

I am using a blog that I created when I first began this 23 Things. I am thinking this blog will be a bit of a prototype for exploring books at the library. I'll use Nose Around to explore the possibilities before I finalize.

Week 1 Lifelong learning

Light little tutorial. It seems to me that librarians by their very nature are lifelong learners. We are a curious bunch and following curiosity is learning. The contract with yourself to learn is a good exercise. I find that the hardest thing of the 7 and 1/2 techniques is "Knowing your goal". I use goals as stepping stones to some far off but unknowable island. However I find the pull of learning irresistible and love to develop a varied toolbox. Each tool in the toolbox is little bits of knowledge.

How Animals Make Us Human

NPR as a story on Temple Grandin. Her new book "Animals Make Us Human" is terrific.

Week 3, Dog's Eye Flickr

http://www.flickr.com/
My new flickr account is named Dog's Eye and the pictures are open to the public. I posted pictures from my life on Maple Hill Farm and of braving the Blizzard on Kettle Pond.

Maple Hill Farm is one of my favorite Kid's books. I dream of chasing chickens.

Wk1, post 1 Making a Blog spot to bury a bone

I'm always sniffing around for good books. My tastes range quite a bit and I don't always stick with the traditional Jack London or Hounds of the Baskervilles. Sometimes I just like old favorites like "To Kill a Mocking Bird". Other times I like to disappear into fantasy land with the Tolkien Trilogy and go on quests and adventures. Of course books with titles like "Born to Run" always catch my interest.

I kind of just follow my nose and see where it leads. There are a lot of delicious old bones buried out there just waiting to be discovered. Come along and my friends and I will show you some lovely surprises.
